Just found your blog. Did you ever finish the client/certificate part? Take a look at my blog if not. I have solved similar problems in .NET to Java WS-Security interop scenarios for 2 different clients (ACE Insurance Group and Dover Harbour Board in the UK). 
In particular there are some tutorials on the subject:

For one customer, my client was Axis2/Rampart (the other was WSIT) and in both contracts my service was WCF, which adds a new level of complexity. A colloborator in the US has since extended what I did to use Apache CXF.
In case you are interested, I am .NET/J2EE Technical Architect/Developer resident in the UK and Greece (Mytilene). I am tax registered in Greece and operating freelance if you need any contract help.
